Anna Doyle Wheeler was born in Tipperary in 1785. Married at the age of fifteen, in 1812 she left with her children for Guernsey to escape an abusive marriage and thereafter to Caen, France where she moved in radical socialist feminist circles. Between 1820 and 1826 she lived alternatively in London and Paris where she worked with, among others, Jeremy Bentham, Charles Fourier, Robert Owen, Marc Antoine Julien, and WIlliam Thompson, in order to promote her own detailed feminist and socialist critique of society, capitalism, and the burgeoning co-operative movement. She died in Camden, London on 7 May 1848.
