NIGHTCALL by Megan Hadfield and Constanza Castagnet
Nightcall was published as part of an exhibition at 4bid Gallery, Amsterdam comprising sculpture, sound, video, and performance.
4bid Gallery is part of OT301, a legalised squat. Megan Hadfield’s ‘Mixed Signals’ takes this specific site as the starting point for a surreal reflection on the housing crisis. The text was born from a late night conversation with a resident who claimed that animal infested properties were sometimes easier to squat, due to the planning legalities regarding certain protected species. Tapping into non-human methods of communication, the protagonists use bat-monitoring techniques to disrupt their precarious living situations.
The exhibition takes the logic of bat echolocation as its point of departure for experimental writing. In Constanza Castagnet’s ‘A Similar Condition’ a nameless protagonist finds herself tormented by an increasingly disturbing sensitivity to sound. Traversing a 1990s Buenos Aires, the psyche of the vampiric protagonist gradually becomes consumed by noise.
