RENT STRIKE 1970-73: RECLAIMING THE HISTORY OF IRISH TENANT'S STRUGGLES by Fiadh Tubridy

Between 1970 and 1973 rent strikes erupted throughout Ireland as tenants fought back against high rents, poor housing conditions and rising living costs. Their eventual victory in August 1973 was described in The Irish Times as "undoubtedly the most dramatic and bloodless victory ever achieved in this century by tenants vs landlords".

The history of these rent strikes is an inspiring story which demonstrates the potential of mass movements and collective action to bring about fundamental changes in the housing system. It provides valuable lessons about how improvements in housing conditions could be won today. Until now this history has been almost entirely unknown except by those who were directly involved. The story of the 1970's rent strikes is recounted in this booklet for the first time. It is based on research carried out by members of the Community Action Tenants Union (CATU) including interviews with those who organised and participated in the movement.
